Milton Takes Prague By: Sophie

Milton Takes Prague By: Sophie

One of the highlights of my time at Milton was my trip to Prague. During this past spring break, Milton’s Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Singers (80+ students) traveled to the Czech Republic to perform and explore the city of “Praha.” We performed in St. Nicholas Church, located in the popular old-town square; in The Museum of Music; in the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, a beautiful church marked by its two 80-meter tall towers; in St. Peter and Paul Church in Brno, which is the second largest city in Czech Republic; and in Lobkowicz Palace. What’s most interesting...

Springtime By: Emma

As another long New England winter finally comes to an end, I begin to notice the sun shining brighter and the birds chirping louder, singing the promise of warmer weather soon to come. Spring is one of my favorite seasons at Milton because the whole school migrates outside, taking advantage of the lovely weather. For instance, now that all the snow has melted, many students eat lunch outside on the quad, and sometimes the whole kitchen even comes outside to host a delicious backyard-style barbeque. Additionally, as some students begin to feel antsy at being kept inside...

One Acts By: Henry

One of the most interesting dramatic performances of the year is the Student Directed One Acts.  Unlike other productions at Milton where the major directorial and production decisions are made by faculty, student directors are in charge of One Acts.  The student directors cast the shows, design the sets, and direct the actors to create a show in their own vision.  These shows range from lighthearted comedies to serious dramas.  This whole process not only lets the directors shine, but as these productions are on a smaller scale, many students without acting experience...

Winter Dance Concert By: Sam

The annual winter Dance Concert takes place the weekend before spring break. The concert is the culmination of months of practice by around 70 students. When tickets became available, the Friday night show sold out in two hours, signifying the show’s buzz around campus. On each of the three nights, King Theater was nearly at full capacity as hundreds of students came out to support their peers. Dance Concert is one of my favorite weekend activities of the whole year because it is so much fun to watch my friends out there on the stage. Many of the dancers were dancing...
Baking Bash By: Jacquelyn

Baking Bash By: Jacquelyn

As Purim, a Jewish holiday, is coming up next week, the Jewish Student Union (JSU) hosted a Hamantaschen making party. Hamentaschen are traditional cookies eaten on Purim; they are triangular shaped pastries filled typically with jam or chocolate.  Although a very small percentage of the Milton community is Jewish, Ms. Klein-Ash, Eliza Scharfstein, and I (the heads of JSU) were overjoyed by the huge turnout of around 35 students who came to bake, learn and hang out. We jumped right into covering our hands in flour, making WAY oversized cookies, experimenting questionable...
French and Spanish Exchange Programs By: Brie

French and Spanish Exchange Programs By:...

Both the Spanish and French departments at Milton offer students the opportunity to participate in exchange programs. Many of my friends who did the French Exchange had tons of fun, a fact that was made obvious by all their pictures from the trip. I went on the Spanish Exchange and it was the best experience I’ve ever had in my time at Milton, maybe even ever. In order to go on the trip, you have to be a junior or senior at Milton who has, of course, taken Spanish.  My junior year, a group of roughly 20 students and three teacher-chaperones flew to Spain and spent the...

Beatnik: The True Talents of Our Communi...

Every two months, almost the entire school gathers in Straus Library for the truest demonstration of Milton’s diverse range of talents: Beatnik. The fire is lit, the lights are dimmed, the leather couches and seats are filled, and most of the school is packed into the ornate building. Beatnik, run by the student artistic publication Magus Mabus, is an open-mic style event that always draws tremendous talent. Over the course of the night, upwards of 20 acts will perform, ranging from the resident jazz band to slam poetry to guitar/piano duets. Known for being a supportive...

Day Student Commute Questions Answered: ...

Hopefully you saw, or will see, how during the school day, boarders and day students intermingle so well you can’t even tell the difference. In fact, if you ignore the diverse cultural backgrounds, talents, and passions Milton students have, you will see that really the only difference in student life of boarders and day students is the location of “home” and how they get back. For day students, the commute to and from school can seem long and tedious, unlike for boarders. However, if you’re not carpooling in your parent’s car with soon-to-be close...

Boarder vs. Day Student By Jessica

As a boarder in Hathaway my freshman year, and a day student my sophomore and junior year, several people have asked me which Milton experience I like better. Living in Hathaway freshman year was an amazing experience. I loved every aspect of it, whether it was eating dinner together as a dorm, sleeping in later, or having 40 potential sisters and several close dorm parents. Leaving the dorm after my freshman year was one of the hardest things I have done during my time at Milton; however, I have grown accustomed to and greatly appreciate being a day student. Being either...

Find Your Club! By Jadeite

At the beginning of every year, there is an activity fair hosted by all the clubs on campus. During every lunch period, all the clubs are lined up in the pathway between the bottom of the student center and the dining hall. Students, whether new or returning, have the opportunity to go to each table and check out what each club is about. Students can also sign a form expressing their interest in as many clubs as they like. Clubs are held after school from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day. This time gives students the opportunity to not only find what their passions are,...

Milton Academy Speakers By Annabelle

Milton Academy Speakers By Annabelle

Milton Academy often invites speakers from various cultures, backgrounds, and professions to speak to educate, entertain, and enlighten the community. Student clubs and organizations also bring speakers to campus as well. These student-run organizations exist to enrich the academic experience of the Milton community. Recently, the Latino Association and the English department combined their efforts to bring renowned author Junot Diaz on campus. With his witty humor and provocative stage presence, he seized the attention of students and faculty members alike. He did not...
