Beatnik: The True Talents of Our Community By: Nathan

Every two months, almost the entire school gathers in Straus Library for the truest demonstration of Milton’s diverse range of talents: Beatnik. The fire is lit, the lights are dimmed, the leather couches and seats are filled, and most of the school is packed into the ornate building. Beatnik, run by the student artistic publication Magus Mabus, is an open-mic style event that always draws tremendous talent. Over the course of the night, upwards of 20 acts will perform, ranging from the resident jazz band to slam poetry to guitar/piano duets. Known for being a supportive environment, the performers range from first-time freshmen to four-year Beatnik veterans. Every performance draws whoops and applause from the crowd, and the crowd stays strong throughout the course of the night. Beatnik is a diverse showcase of the musical talent Milton is a home to, and it is always an enjoyable way to spend a Friday night.
