Day Student Commute Questions Answered: Bus Community By Rika

Hopefully you saw, or will see, how during the school day, boarders and day students intermingle so well you can’t even tell the difference. In fact, if you ignore the diverse cultural backgrounds, talents, and passions Milton students have, you will see that really the only difference in student life of boarders and day students is the location of “home” and how they get back. For day students, the commute to and from school can seem long and tedious, unlike for boarders. However, if you’re not carpooling in your parent’s car with soon-to-be close friends/neighbors, you will most likely ride the Milton school bus.

It’s hard to get pumped up about a bus commute, especially if it’s in a big yellow school bus that you thought you would never have to ride in after middle school. Yet, you will most likely find yourself in a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive community of Milton peers like I did on the Brookline-Newton bus, one of four of the buses Milton offers, otherwise known as the A-1 bus. On A-1 as you can see, we’ve developed friendships with people at our stops and others, for example by sharing, every morning, the struggles of waking up early. Through mutual understanding of the seemingly tough commute, we’ve turned bus rides into an enjoyable community, and a good workspace as well. You can bond with people all of different interests and different grades (just like a dorm), while doing your homework on your way to school or back!
