Boarder Dinner

Boarder Dinner

Winter break is rapidly approaching. As a junior, I have a lot of work to do. Now is the time, in preparation for the midyear exams, where many of the teachers assign a major assignment. Despite this tough academic stretch until winter break, Milton does a great job of providing us with opportunities to unwind and relax. Goodwin house, my dorm, will have dodge ball practice in preparation for the upcoming season. We have Gingerbread house contests. We also take breaks with a game of pool or ping pong.   But what I want to talk to you about is Boarder dinner, which is...
TextLess, Live More

TextLess, Live More

On Monday November 18, Milton Academy participated in the second official “TextLess, Live More” day. “TextLess” was started to honor Merritt Levitan, Class of 2013, who was tragically hit by a car and killed while on a cross-country bike trip in July.  Three seniors, who were close to Merritt, wanted to pay tribute to her by establishing certain days for students, staff and faculty to turn off their phones from 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. The purpose of these days is not only to prevent texting and driving, but also to foster an awareness of what is happening in the...
Ruby Tuesday with the Cross-Country Team

Ruby Tuesday with the Cross-Country Team

Last week we had our cross-country banquet to mark the end of the season. It was really fun. There was a slide show, prizes, and we even got Bertucci’s to cater. I was hard to say good-bye to cross-country because since freshman year, I always found the sport very bittersweet. Running is very grueling, but the team is so fun that the workouts are always worth it. We won the ISL championship last year and came in second this year. Milton cross-country is not just about winning. Our team is successful because of the team chemistry and our fun traditions. One of our...

Projectile Motion in Advanced Physics

This week in advanced physics we had a challenge from our teacher. We were studying projectile motion and how an object acts when shot under a certain set of restraints (e.g., launch angle and initial velocity). Mr. Kernohan, our teacher, challenged us to make a path of rings in the air through which he could shoot a metal ball. The challenging part was to complete his task while knowing only the angle the cannon was going to be shot at and observing one shot of the cannon when set at 0 degrees. It seemed improbable, but our class accepted the challenge. By measuring the...
Swap-It Dance: A Great Milton Tradition

Swap-It Dance: A Great Milton Tradition

“Swap-it,” Milton Academy’s school-wide sale, is a 60-year annual tradition that remains one of the most highly anticipated events for the School’s community. On the day of the dance, the Swap-it doors open for all Upper School students to find the coolest hidden gems. We raid the sale for the best and craziest costumes in preparation for the dance that night. While some people buy wigs, dresses and hats, others search for leotards, costumes and collectables. The dance not only serves as a way to support the Milton community, it also serves as a way for the...
Yearbook Excitement

Yearbook Excitement

The year seems to be flying by as the winter season fast approaches. As one of the head editors of the yearbook, this means there is little time to pull everything together. Luckily, at our weekly meetings, more students are showing up to help out. From taking pictures to designing the layout, everyone is graciously adding their own touches to the book. Before we can put all the pictures in, however, we need to come up with a theme. Past yearbooks have centered on different ideas, ranging from the changing seasons to different elements. After a discussion, the yearbook...
GO M.A.!

GO M.A.!

A few weekends ago, I traveled the 25 minutes to school to watch the Mustangs take on the St. Sebastian’s Arrows in a highly anticipated football game that could determine who is the Independent School League (ISL) champion. I joined a crowd of kids sitting in the stands cheering on the Mustangs to a dramatic 31-27 victory. Here, at Milton, we take all our sports seriously and cheer on our friends and the “Orange and Blue” as much as possible. Some of my fondest memories of my time at Milton have come from cheering on my friends at these sporting events. I still...
Parents’ Weekend

Parents’ Weekend

While the end of October may mean fall foliage and Halloween to many, to Milton Academy students the end of October means one thing: Parents’ Weekend. One of my favorite weekends of the year, Parents’ Weekend gives parents special insights to everyday life as a Milton student. On the Friday of Parents’ Weekend, my mom accompanied me to each of my classes, observing the lectures and even solving some calculus problems. After my school day ended, we ventured down to the ACC for an excellent lunch with friends and their parents. Parents also have the opportunity to meet...
Field Hockey: Overtime Excitement

Field Hockey: Overtime Excitement

One of my absolute favorite activities at Milton is playing on the field hockey team. The team has great traditions such as weekly team dinners and dress-up days before games. Recently we faced off against Thayer Academy, a team that won Independent School League championship in 2010 and 2011. The day of the game, the whole team dressed in a “white-out,” wearing all white everything. When asked why, each team member proudly announced our game that afternoon. The previous year, we beat Thayer on their turf (2-0) and the whole team was extremely excited for this year’s...
The Transitions Program at Milton

The Transitions Program at Milton

A week before school started, about 40 new students and 12 returning students attended the Transitions Program. Transitions is an opportunity for multicultural students to gather and acclimate themselves to the academic and social rigor of Milton. As a senior counselor, I formed relationships with younger students that are sustained and nourished throughout the school year. I answered questions about geometry, day student and boarder activities, and the many ways to get involved at school. Thinking back to my freshman year, Transitions provided me an arena where I could...
Game Day with the Wolfpack

Game Day with the Wolfpack

Since sophomore year, I have played on the girls’ varsity soccer team, nicknamed the Wolfpack.  Even though soccer is not my main extracurricular activity, it has been an influential experience at Milton because it introduced me to some of my closest friends and gave me the opportunity to relax and have fun for two hours a day.  The Wolfpack distinguishes itself from other teams on campus through its traditions, ranging from team dinners the night before big games to dressing up in outrageous costumes during practice the day before Swap-It dance.  Game days...

Senior Projects

Today was the first day back from spring vacation! Senior are now entering their last full month of classes until we begin Senior Projects in the beginning of May. The project period extends for the last month of the school year and is an opportunity for seniors to pursue an interest outside of the traditional classroom environment. Because projects are chosen, designed, and completed by students, the last month of Milton Academy is completely what seniors make of the experience. Seniors can either keep all their classes, do one or two projects, or combine both classes and...
