Field Hockey: Overtime Excitement

One of my absolute favorite activities at Milton is playing on the field hockey team. The team has great traditions such as weekly team dinners and dress-up days before games. Recently we faced off against Thayer Academy, a team that won Independent School League championship in 2010 and 2011. The day of the game, the whole team dressed in a “white-out,” wearing all white everything. When asked why, each team member proudly announced our game that afternoon. The previous year, we beat Thayer on their turf (2-0) and the whole team was extremely excited for this year’s game. It was also our first home game of the season.

Before every home game, after our locker room meeting, the team lines up in two lines in complete silence. We begin our walk to the field, down the hall in the athletic center. Above the doors there is a vent with “Play Like a Champion” written on it. The whole team hits it with our sticks, making a deafening noise above our silence. We continue onto the field and do our warm up lap, breaking into a circle at the end and cheering for Milton. We scored within the first five minutes of the game. The whole team went crazy, as did all the parents and fans that came out to support us. From there it was a back and forth game, the score remaining at 1-0 until the last 10 minutes when Thayer was able to put one in, making the score 1-1.

Our team came in for the huddle, everyone tired, but incredibly excited. For overtime, there are only seven players counting the goalie instead of the usual 11. Our coach named the overtime team and we took to the field, ready to fight for a win. We immediately took the ball up towards their end, trying to get a quick goal. After a couple of our attempts, Thayer got the ball and began storming their way towards our end. Since we only had six field players, I was the only defender. Our midfielders hustled back and Thayer got a corner. After fighting it out, we got a free hit. I drove the ball down the right side of the field to one of our seniors. Milton passed around, fighting Thayer for possession. The sidelines were going nuts, members of both teams screaming loudly. Milton passed the ball in front of the net and we tipped the ball in. The whole team stormed that end, the fans cheering, and our coach smiling from ear to ear. We shook hands with Thayer. It was a great win for Milton, and one we will use this whole season to propel us further. Check out this link from the Patriot Ledger!
