The Transitions Program at Milton

A week before school started, about 40 new students and 12 returning students attended the Transitions Program. Transitions is an opportunity for multicultural students to gather and acclimate themselves to the academic and social rigor of Milton. As a senior counselor, I formed relationships with younger students that are sustained and nourished throughout the school year. I answered questions about geometry, day student and boarder activities, and the many ways to get involved at school.

Thinking back to my freshman year, Transitions provided me an arena where I could ask honest questions about diversity at Milton and also experience a week that shed light on my next four years. I realized the seniors who first welcomed me were approachable, and that I could internally relate to someone who did or did not externally look like me. Not only does the program provide space for dialogue, but it also eases new students into the expectations of Milton: classroom expectations, school polices, and the standard of involvement. My second time attending Transitions, I realized what a joy it is to attend a school where everyone is as excited about learning as they are excited about the weekend. With that as my starting point, I’m pumped for the new friendships the rest of the year will bring. At Milton, you can always expect to meet brilliant scholars, community activists, jovial athletes, and exuberant beings.
