Milton Basketball – ISL Champs!

Hundreds of students, faculty, family members, and alumni crowded into the ACC last Friday to watch Milton’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball face off against rival Nobles. The energy and hype around the game was electric, for a clear goal was in place for the team: Win the ISL championship. Everyone playing and in attendance knew exactly what was being played for. Players had been making announcements, and no one hesitated in mentioning what was on the line. In reality, the ISL title was being played for, and no one involved was looking to shy away from that. When game day...

Shoveling Out

If you haven’t heard, the entire northeast got pounded with a massive blizzard over this past weekend. Here in Milton we got over two feet of snow and had two unplanned days off from school. When we went to bed Thursday, the quad was empty, but when we finally came out after the storm on Saturday morning, let’s just say that you were not going outside without boots on. I woke up sometime around ten on Saturday and some of my dorm-mates in Forbes House and I decided to help the dorm parents dig out their cars that were plowed in.  The twenty of us that were out there...

Micro-Economics

One of the greatest perks of being a senior is the great course selection I am able to choose from this year. By far, my favorite course has bee Micro-Economics with Mr. McQuirk. Over the last week, my two partners and I have worked to put together a portfolio and commercial for a t-shirt design. After surveying many students in the student center and filming a commercial throughout the school, we presented our design to the school on Friday. Not only was it a lot of fun, but also we were able to learn all the work that goes into selling a product with the ultimate goal...

Happy Holidays from Orange and Blue Key

The holiday spirit has finally hit campus in the final days leading up to winter break. The Student Center is filled with lights and fake snow shines on every windowsill. This weekend, a gingerbread house making contest created a delicious display in the dining hall. Each dorm has also used the holiday season as an opportunity to advertise house pride by hanging massive letters above the entrances, marking each house from across the Quad. Inside of the dorms, Secret Snowflake clues are being dropped and the boys are practicing for caroling following Boarder Dinner. On the...

Dorm Caroling

There are very few nights as enjoyable as the night of Boarder Dinner. The night begins with the entire boarding community coming together for a delicious meal. After dinner, all of the boys’ dorms head out for my favorite part of the night- caroling.  We first sing to the head of school, Mr. Bland, and his family, and then proceed to stop to serenade every girls’ dorm.  Our dorm started practicing a week ago in anticipation of the big night. The songs are rarely traditional Christmas carols, but rather fun, popular songs that are easy to sing (Taylor Swift has...

Community Service Through Squash

At Milton there are numerous opportunities to partake in community service like Community Service Day and weekly volunteering opportunities at a variety of local sites. Every day, we learn the value of hard work and caring for one another. One of the best ways to show our values and care for the community around us is through service. The weekend before Thanksgiving Break, fellow OBK Head Tucker Hamlin and I went to the annual SquashBusters Thanksgiving Fest. As captains of the varsity squash team, we, along with Lillie Simourian of Class I and Coach Morgan Poor, traveled...

Gotcha!

This week at Milton Academy, the entire upper school participates in a campus-wide game called “Gotcha”. Essentially, it is a huge game of tag. Every student is emailed a name of another student in which they must tag. The tagged student will give the name of their target to the student who got him or her out, and the game goes on until only a few linger. This Milton tradition unifies the entire upper school and allows students to meet new people that they may not have known before. Gotcha is a great way to bring fun into the community before Thanksgiving...

ISL Champions!

Monday morning (with the help of Day Light Savings), I cheerfully got to school early and spent 15 minutes in the bathroom painting the letters “XC” on all of my teammates left cheeks, because our left cheeks are close to our hearts.   Not only is this week Spirit Week, my favorite five academic days of the school year, but also the Girls Cross Country team has just won the ISL Championship. Our school pride is shining brighter than ever!   Last Friday our team traveled to rival territory at Nobles and ran our toughest race of the year against all 12 ISL teams....

My Long Weekend

After this weekend, we are now in the middle of one of the longest stretches of uninterrupted school.  This past three-day weekend was pretty typical of what I usually do around here. After football practice on Friday, the entire football team, as we always do, went out to Wendy’s. Fast food is not the ideal pre-game meal, but the Milton football team has been going every week for something like twenty years. After coming back from Wendy’s I went back to my dorm, Forbes House, and just relaxed and watched TV. A few of us in the dorm have become addicted to a...

My Favorite Thing About Milton

For me, my favorite part of Milton is the community.  Milton truly has the best community. Everyone, from the teachers to the students, has an interesting background and story about themselves.   The Milton community is filled with people from different cultural backgrounds who add a unique dynamic to everyday life. Whether it is discussing a novel in English Class or exploring a foreign land in History, every student adds a new and fascinating piece of knowledge that enhances the knowledge of all the students at...

Why Milton?

Why Milton? When I initially applied to the school, the first factors that came to my mind were: academics, extracurriculars, fantastic teachers, etc. However, after getting into the school and starting my life at the institution, I realized that Milton was much more than that. I’m happy to have come to the school not only because I’m learning how to think or how to be responsible for a club, but also because I respect the people that inhabit the school. Although you can find good academics and competitive athletics at many institutions across the country, it is much...

Boarding Life

My favorite part about Milton, far and away, is living in the dorm.  Applying to schools, I knew I wanted to experience boarding life, so I only applied to boarding schools.  Living in the dorm has far exceeded my expectations.   Living in the dorm with 45 other guys is like having 45 brothers. Whether it’s a Saturday morning touch football game on the quad or a debate about whether or not golf is a sport in the lobby at check in, dorm life makes it so easy to relax and relieve the stress of school when you need to. (Golf is definitely a sport, by the way.) It’s...
