Tough but Supportive: Milton’s Academic Environment By Jiyoung

The strong connections between teachers and students at Milton can be seen in classes. I may be stating the obvious and simply what many expect, since Milton takes pride in its small class sizes: an average of 14 students per class. However, the degree to which the teachers dedicate themselves to their students constantly amazes me. Milton’s teachers not only actively encourage their students in classes, but they also never hesitate to give help outside of classes.

Prior to exam week, as I prepared for my upcoming exams, I realized I still had many questions about the material in my classes. Complying with my classmates’ and my requests, many of my teachers willingly scheduled review sessions, even during the weekend. My history teacher even held review sessions on two different days to ensure that every student who wished to could attend a review session. Even when the teachers and students have conflicting schedules that don’t allow them to meet, the teachers try their best to make themselves available through other means. When my Chinese teacher and I couldn’t find a time to meet before the exam, she made sure to answer all of my questions through an hour-long phone call. During normal school days, teachers readily meet with students to give extra help; once, the night before a regular test, my math teacher came to my dorm to answer the questions that I didn’t have the chance to ask in class. Even when there aren’t any upcoming major assignments, many students regularly meet with their teachers to receive help. Although Milton’s academic curriculum can be challenging, the astounding devotion of Milton’s faculty to teaching creates an incredibly supportive academic atmosphere.
