Activities Period By Caroline

The half hour between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m., right after classes end and before sports practice or theater rehearsal begins, is one of the most action-packed times of the whole day.  During this “activities period,” student clubs and groups meet all around campus.  With choices ranging from Robotics Team to Karate Club to Sustainability Board to French Club to Rock and Roll Club, a student can easily find something fun to occupy this 30-minute window.  The existence of this activities period was very important to my own decision to attend Milton because I love art, but I play a sport every season.

At the beginning of my freshman year at Milton, I visited all the different booths during the annual fall activities fair.  To my surprise, I didn’t really find the art club I was looking for–I saw ASC (Art with a Social Conscience), a club focused on making the Milton community aware of social issues through art installations, but didn’t find a straightforward “arts and crafts” club.  I signed up for some very interesting clubs that fall but still longed for my original vision of an art club.  At the beginning of my sophomore year, I applied to create just such an art club with one of my friends.  Milton allows students of any grade to apply to create a student club or group.  The process was so easy that I should have done it earlier!  The director of student activities read our application, paired us with some upperclassmen interested in the same type of club, and gave us funding.  Our club is called “Art 170” (a nod to Milton’s address, 170 Centre Street) and we plan laidback art projects for each week (and provide a tasty snack!).  Some of my favorite projects we’ve offered students this year have included blindfolded drawing, holiday ornament making, and finger painting.
