Recess By: Ashleigh

One of my favorite times of the day at Milton Academy is only 15 minutes long from 10:00 to 10:15 a.m. This time is recess. Many high schools and middle schools don’t have recess and although our recess is not playing on swings and running around outside, our high school recess is just as fun. You can find almost the whole Upper School congregated in the Student Center talking and eating breakfast sandwiches from the snack bar. On Fridays, there is music playing and everyone is singing and dancing. Upperclassmen can be seen hanging over the balcony and underclassmen are downstairs. Although somewhat intimidating at first, it is a great privilege when you finally enter junior year and make the move upstairs in the Student Center. Suddenly you are among the oldest in the School and you are watched by the underclassmen so it is important to lead by example. I love walking into the student center at 10:00 to be greeted by so many smiling faces. No one is thinking about the quiz they have next period or the homework they did last night; instead everyone is chatting and focusing on the relaxing social time they have now. Even if I don’t have classes with everyone in the School, I have the opportunity to see everyone during this time.  Not only does it give students a little time of break away from classes, but it also is a time for everyone to interact and socialize together. It represents the sense of community at Milton. Everyone is together; not alone or split into groups. Everyone is happy to see one another.  Students at Milton work very hard, but they also have free time and time to have fun.
