Gotcha: We Do Play
Milton’s head monitors announce the exact moment when Gotcha begins. A game of elimination, players tag one another and try to keep from being tagged themselves. The winner is the last surviving player. The game is launched during the shoulder week between sports seasons, and every student from Class IV to Class I is on the playing roster. Some people really take to the live action game, and play to win. “What is safe water?” asked Dr. Daniele Lantagne as she spoke to students about the role math and science plays in her work on household water treatment in developing countries. Dr. Lantagne ‘s research focuses on developing, implementing and assessing the effectiveness of water and sanitation interventions in developing countries and emergency contexts.
read moreJennifer Hughes: Artist Now Teaching in the Visual Arts Department
Jennifer Hughes, the newest faculty member of Milton’s visual arts department, introduces printmaking techniques to students in her art classes. In Studio Art, students work on relief printing—carving images into woodblocks and rolling the ink across the flat surfaces. In Advanced Drawing, there is a unit on intaglio printing, where students carve lines into the surface of plexiglass and then put the ink into the lines—the opposite of relief printing.

In December, there’s no mistaking the holiday cheer that abounds on campus. Students returning from Thanksgiving break find a campus decked out in twinkling lights and colorful decorations. Spelled out in strung lights, a giant “F” announces the Forbes boys’ abode. Ribbons wrap the pillars of Wolcott House like a gift. The festive energy around School reminds students that winter break is near, and each house’s holiday traditions have students celebrating the season with their family away from home.

Class II parents can visit campus with their children during the second weekend in January (January 9 and 10) for a constructive, two-day period of discussion and meetings about the college process. Thyra Briggs, Vice President for Admission and Financial Aid at Harvey Mudd College, will speak to Class II parents at the dinner on Friday night. The Community Service Board has been working hard over the past weeks, preparing for the holiday season. Every year, Milton students and adults commit to raising money and buying holiday gifts for local children and families in need, through nonprofit organizations and the Department of Children and Families. This year, students, faculty and staff purchased 30 coats for children of the Brookview House. Dr. Donald Johnson—English professor and poet in residence at East Tennessee State University—was this fall’s Bingham Visiting Reader. Dr. Johnson met with students in Class I and II, and in honor of Veterans’ Day, he began his reading with two poems that are about soldiers and war.
