What Happens in Those First Few Days of School?

Milton’s programming for new students begins on Tuesday, September 2. Opening of school activities are designed to help students get to know one another, get to know the adults on campus, and help them feel comfortable at School. We know that while new students are surrounded by welcoming faces, they are making their way over unfamiliar terrain. Our programs in the opening days are geared toward helping everyone get acclimated—to feel good about who and where they are. These programs are designed by in-house experts—our own faculty and...

AMC Rewards Imagination With New Functionality

For the first time, at least in “modern” history, students can pursue any and all of Milton’s visual arts programs in one building, the Art and Media Center. This summer, changes that will not strike some as dramatic, have nevertheless prepared all three levels of the AMC for unparalleled opportunities and collaborations in the arts. Ian Torney, visual arts chair, used the relocation of sculpture, ceramics and woodworking from Robert Saltonstall as a chance to rethink how spaces are outfitted and aligned, not only for today’s world of arts,...

What Is An Advisor?

What Is An Advisor?

An advisor helps oversee and guide your child’s overall experience at Milton. He or she is a faculty member, and the main communication link between you and the School, on matters that relate to your child. Each faculty member typically advises six to eight students. Boarding students’ advisors usually live in, or are closely associated with, a student’s house. Students often have the same advisor for all their Milton years (Grade 9 through 12). What should I expect of my child’s relationship with his or her advisor?...

Be a Part of the Host Family Program

Milton’s Host Family Program helps new boarding students transition to campus life by providing a “home away from home,” and offering additional connection and support. While the program is particularly helpful to international students, it also serves students coming to Milton from other parts of the U.S. Milton’s host families, often the family of a day student or nearby boarding student, help make that transition, especially in the initial years, easier. This year, we also welcome alumni and the parents of former...

Community Service Opportunities

Can you help? The Community Service program depends on gracious volunteer drivers to get students to and from their weekly, off-campus service sites. Parents have been a tremendous help in making volunteer work possible for over 250 dedicated students each year. Students volunteer at area public elementary schools, day care centers, elder centers, residences for the disabled, and the local animal shelter, where their assistance is always much appreciated. Drivers over the years have enjoyed getting to know students as they share in the funny...

Annual Fund Success

Annual Fund Success

Together, Milton parents raised over $1.97 million—$240,000 more than the previous year—for the 2013–2014 Annual Fund. Over 670 families contributed to this outstanding total. Annual Fund gifts help support every area of the school. Providing approximately seven percent of Milton’s annual budget, these gifts help fill the gap between tuition and the true cost of a Milton education. Because of parent support, Milton is able to recruit and retain talented faculty, keep a low student-to-teacher ratio, enrich its diverse community, and maintain...

From the Archives: Linde Eyster in the Old Science Building

Thumbing through boxes of old photos archived in Cox Library, staff in the communication office stumbled upon this gem from 1994. While many things at Milton inevitably change over the course of two decades—argyle sweaters fall out of style, photographs are stored digitally (and in color), facilities are updated to meet technological advances—one crucial component remains constant: Milton’s exceptional faculty.
