What Happens in Those First Few Days of School?

Milton’s programming for new students begins on Tuesday, September 8. Opening of school activities are designed to help students get to know one another, get to know the adults on campus, and help them feel comfortable at School. We know that while new students are surrounded by welcoming faces, they are making their way over unfamiliar terrain.

Our programs in the opening days are geared toward helping everyone get acclimated—to feel good about who and where they are. These programs are designed by in-house experts—our own faculty and students—who know what being new to Milton feels like and what experiences will be helpful in those first few days.

Opening of School Q&A

At the Opening of School, where can I…

…find the opening of school schedule?
The deans’ office has created an online calendar listing events specific to the opening of school. This calendar displays all events happening in those first few days and allows you to filter the information to only the events you need to see. View this opening of school calendar. Your opening of school schedule will also be available on your myMilton page.

…get my class schedule?
Class schedules can be accessed from your child’s myMilton page the week before registration, pending the School’s receipt of all required forms. If your child has problems viewing or printing his or her schedule from myMilton during registration, please contact the Help Desk at 617-898-1767.

…pass in my health forms?
Health forms should have been returned by mail over the summer. If you have not mailed them, be sure to bring your health forms with you to registration in the Schwarz Student Center. Students will not be able to attend classes or participate in athletics until the forms are on file with the Health Center.

What is an Advisor?

An advisor helps oversee and guide your child’s overall experience at Milton. He or she is a faculty member, and the main communication link between you and the School, on matters that relate to your child. Each faculty member typically advises six to eight students. Boarding students’ advisors usually live in, or are closely associated with, a student’s house. Students often have the same advisor throughout their Upper School experience.

Community Service Opportunities

Can you help? The Community Service program depends on gracious volunteer drivers to get students to and from their weekly, off-campus service sites. Parents have been a tremendous help in making volunteer work possible for over 250 dedicated students each year. Students volunteer at area public elementary schools, day care centers, elder centers, residences for the disabled, and the local animal shelter, where their assistance is always much appreciated. Drivers over the years have enjoyed getting to know students as they share in the funny...

Want to Know What’s Up on Campus?

Want to Know What’s Up on Campus?

Don’t miss out on the excitement. You can connect with goings on across campus—formal and informal. See what students and faculty are doing in several easy ways:

Check the website every day. Milton’s homepage delivers up to date news in many forms. Timely feature articles highlight students’, faculty and alumni activities. Video and slide shows let you in on fun, ceremony, performance and exhibits. And everyone’s favorite, Photo of the Day, presents a serendipitous moment that, over time, conveys Milton culture.

Set up Milton’s calendar to serve you. Milton’s website calendar includes every major and minor event, on and off campus, that involves Milton students, faculty or staff. When you explore the calendar, you’ll see that it will synch with your own calendar, and it will email you about any upcoming events with timing that you choose. You can set it to synch or email a single event, or a category of events—like boys’ soccer, arts events, or weekend activities. You’ll see “Add to my calendar” and “Remind me by email” on the top bar of the calendar listings. Simply decide what works best for you and choose the option you’d like.

Open the Weekend Activities email from Dean José Ruiz. Dean Ruiz and activities director Kelly Reiser combine forces to send parents an email roughly once each month that details student weekend event plans. Rely on this summary to see what options students have for fun in their free time.

Art All Around: Making Room For the New

Last fall’s opening of the renovated Art and Media Center coincided with a colorful and inspired addition to the Centre Street quad. Sculptor Rob Lorenson’s art launched the first installation of the Nesto Gallery outdoor art exhibition series. This summer, members of Milton’s facilities services, Pete Henderson and Manny Tavares, helped Mr. Lorenson and his crew safely de-install the large works of art to make room for the exhibition’s second artist. In this coming school year, students and adults will enjoy, outdoors, the art of sculptor...

Be a Part of the Host Family Program

Milton’s Host Family Program helps new boarding students transition to campus life by providing a “home away from home,” and offering additional connection and support. While the program is particularly helpful to international students, it also serves students coming to Milton from other parts of the U.S. Milton’s host families, often the family of a day student or nearby boarding student, help make that transition, especially in the initial years, easier. This year, we also welcome alumni and the parents of former students as host families....
