Co-Head Monitors Rise to Lead in the Year Ahead

Newly elected head monitors Avery Park (II) and Mack Makishima (II) have taken up the mantle as school leaders from outgoing head monitors Caroline Wall (I) and Louis Demetroulakos (I). Avery lives in Millet House and is from Walpole, Massachusetts. Mack lives around the corner, in Milton.

Fresh from the Class II Retreat, full of energy and spirit for their class and School, Class II students rise to the challenge of running for office. Over the course of two weeks in April, four boys and four girls—self-nominated—each made his or her case to all students and to the faculty, that he or she should be one of the two head monitors for the 2015–2016 year.

Avery and Mack said they are already planning for the 2015–2016 school year, and the Class II retreat generated a lot of ideas.

“The junior weekend went really well,” says Mack. “And we discovered it was not because of activities per se, but because the activities were student driven. We found students were more apt to take on leadership during a student-propelled activity; they really owned it.”

Avery says this is how they want to frame student involvement next year in regard to school unity and spirit.  One of their ideas is to set up a SGA Schoology page where students can post suggestions and express interest in projects, and SGA members can post meeting minutes and notes.  Avery and Mack hope this will bring more transparency to the student government process.

Being a member of Class I is a leadership position in and of itself, and carrying both influence and responsibility. Avery and Mack say they are excited about leading their class and forging strong relationships among all classes, creating an inclusive environment.
