Milton offers dozens of extracurricular activities. There are countless political, artistic, and academic clubs. Some clubs are casual, while others are competitive. Some require hours of commitment a week, others only 30 minutes. One of them, however, seems to fall in between all of those categories: the Debate Team.

Debate is done in a parliamentary format, with two teams of two going head to head against each other. There is no research required (although a knowledge of current events doesn’t hurt), as topics are given on the spot, and the teams only have ten minutes to prepare their speeches. So debate is accessible to anyone, even those with lots of other extracurriculars. The speeches themselves are eight minutes long, with one speaker giving a five minute and a three minute speech. The speeches normally consist of both presenting your side’s arguments and refuting those of the opponent. Each year there are about six tournaments, with novice and advanced divisions, and you and your partner go to typically two or three of them.

Debate is certainly not for everyone. That doesn’t mean, however, that it’s not for you. Anyone who considers themselves a capable public speaker should do well. The time commitment is minimal–just weekly meetings and practices. Tournaments, although they take a whole day, are not mandatory. Debate is certainly open to those who just want to practice their public speaking. So, if you do happen to come to Milton, keep an open mind. Give debate a shot. I decided to take the chance, and I have loved it ever since.

During the winter season, a group of students and faculty prepare for the much-anticipated annual Winter Dance Concert. For four months, students and faculty choreograph and teach dances to their dancers in preparation for three nights of performances. This year, the styles of dance ranged from the usual contemporary and hip hop styles to cultural dances, such as African, Indian and Latin. The diversity of dancing styles is something that Milton’s students bring to the Dance Concert, because students take the initiative to become choreographers for the concert.

Dance Concert embodies the Milton experience for me. At many schools, it is rare that the plays and concerts have audience numbers equal to or surpassing football and soccer games. For the Milton Academy Dance Concert, tickets sell out within minutes of going on sale. People line up hours ahead of the doors opening for good seats, and students and faculty bring flowers and make signs for students. Dance Concert is a pride-filled part of Milton Academy, from the faculty members in charge, to student choreographers and dancers, to the students who manage to find seats for all three nights–support is found in surplus here.

Although Milton does not have a pool on campus, we do have a thriving swim and dive team. We take a bus to the UMass Boston pool everyday, which is just 15 minutes away from campus. This year, the boys’ team won the Independent School League for the fourth year and the girls’ team won for the second year. We definitely pride ourselves on having such a competent team.

The swim and dive team is a close group of about 40 students who love being active and in the pool. Although we often complain about jumping into the cold water or practicing until dinner time, these conversations bring us closer. We love our teammates, coaches and the team as a collective.

Everyone, whether you are a swimmer or diver, is very supportive, spirited and encouraging. Because swim and dive is a team sport as much as it is an individual sport, we always pride ourselves in calling ourselves a team and push each other to become better. Even though we are a coed-team and from different grades, we consider one another as not only teammates but also close friends. We have some fun annual traditions, such as Secret Snowflake, water polo and team dinner, which allow us to take a break from the hard practices and purely enjoy being a part of the team. Having been on the team for two years now, I can confidently say that even if you may not love the sport, you will grow to love the team.

At Milton, doing a sport is a great way to keep in shape, get involved in the community, and make new friends all at once. You will definitely form close bonds with your teammates through practices, bus rides, and meets/games. The swim and dive team, in particular, has given me the unique experience of being part of a truly caring team.

The fall air is crisp and my feet touch down on the lush grass as I step onto the pitch. It is not a normal Saturday. It is “Nobles Day” and I am ready to take down our rival school, Nobles and Greenough, in soccer. My cleats are snug on my feet and my uniform is smooth against my chest. Our team gathers in the center of the field to give one last cheer, “Stangs on three, family on six.” “One, Two, Three, Stangs, Four, Five, Six, Family.” We break out from our huddle and I head over to the right wing. The sidelines erupt with cheers, and I anticipate the referee’s whistle. My body feels electrified. I am ready to go.

The excitement to this game started six days ago at the start of Spirit Week. During Spirit Week every day has a theme, from tropical day to twin day. The final day is Orange and Blue day when there is a school wide pep rally. The athletic center is filled with students waving orange and blue pom poms and towels and chanting. There is music, dancing, and the annual Milton Nobles video. At the end, we all come together under the orange and blue confetti raining down to support one another in our quest to beat Nobles. “Nobles Day” switches its location every year—it’s at Milton one year and Nobles the next. No matter where it is, you can always count on good clam chowder, snacks, friendly competition, and a lot of spirit. Although I love being a fan for basketball, hockey, squash, and wrestling in the winter, in the fall and spring I have the opportunity to be on the field. The energy, sense of community, and support you feel whether playing in a freshmen, junior varsity, or varsity game is incredible. No matter what the level, the Milton community will be lining the field and the game will be absolutely hype.

Upon arrival, we split into various groups and begin our annual pumpkin carving. In previous years, my group has carved designs such as the Boston Red Sox’s logo and a wolf howling at the moon. Then we wait in suspense as the teachers judge our carving skills. The carvers of the best pumpkin win Snack Bar Bucks, which is credit towards buying snacks, food, and drinks at the snack bar in the Student Center.

To prepare for the occasion, we hang up spider webs and plaster the walls with ghost cutouts. The faculty kids at Milton walk through the halls of Hallowell and knock on our doors for candy. Then, to end the night, we gather in our common room to take pictures and eat Halloween themed candy. These nights of coming together to honor these traditions are some of my favorite memories at Milton.

Listen to the way the rain hits the flat roof of the Arts and Media Center as you paint, draw or sculpt away your rainy day blues. The AMC is open all day and in the evenings, and there are always supplies for painting, pottery, drawing, digital art and much more. Students come to finish up a still life sketch for their Advanced Drawing course or to wheel throw as a study break from their English papers. Whatever your interest or ability in art, there’s an option waiting for you to discover here, and a rainy day is the perfect time to explore.

Warm up by grabbing a bowl of soup and pouring yourself some tea, coffee or hot chocolate in Forbes Dining Hall. The warm, bustling atmosphere during fifth and sixth period lunch can provide the perfect contrast to a cold, rainy day

Sit on the second floor of the Stu (our Student Center) and enjoy the glass walled view of the gray day as you commiserate with friends. You can almost always find pockets of students sitting together on the couches by the windows or hanging over the railing talking to their friends on the first floor. The Stu is the hub of social life at the Academy, and there’s no better way to enjoy a rainy day than with friends.

Make the most of those indoor practices. As tough as it can be to fit girls’ and boys’ varsity, junior varsity and freshmen teams indoors at the same time, the challenge becomes part of the fun. Some teams use the time to analyze game film, while others sit together in their locker rooms to have serious conversations about goals and plans for the rest of the season.

Curl up on a couch in Straus Library with your US History readings or a new book. Few people know about this hidden gem, for most people only know it as the College Counseling office or the site of morning assembly a few times a week. However, Straus has some of the comfiest couches around and the wood paneled room, with its shelves of antique books and comforting fireplace, provides a serene escape from a rainy day.

When the rain subsides, walk around campus and appreciate that refreshing post-rain scent and the freshly cleansed beauty of Milton’s campus. Stick to the pavement so your shoes don’t soak through!

The annual dodge ball competition between dorms is a long-standing tradition at Milton Academy. Dorms are not just places to live in, but they are also every boarder’s home away from home and dorm dodge ball is a wonderful way for dorm mates to connect and get closer as the year goes on. Dorm dodge ball will always be one of my favorite memories at Milton. Every year is really intense and fun; some boarders wear eye black, put on their game faces, and others sport mismatching, colorful outfits. Playing dodgeball after a long day of classes is the perfect way to relieve stress, have fun with friends, and create an unforgeable bonding through representing his/her second home, their dorms.

During the first weekend back on campus in September, the Student Activities Association (SAA) puts on special events to kick off the year. This year they put on a carnival, which included real rides and fire dancers. On a beautiful, summer-like night, hundreds of students came out and participated. The rides included spinning teacups, slides, and a swinging boat. There were also carnival games and snacks. The SAA puts on events every weekend, ranging from trips to the mall, hypnotist performances, and dances. Coming up soon is the annual Glow Dance, where students paint each other with fluorescent paint that glows under the blacklights at the dance. The first few weeks back at school are often some of the best weeks for students as they get to see friends again and have fun before the school year moves into high gear.

The community at Milton Academy is the single most defining aspect of the School. When I heard that word at freshman orientation, I honestly did not know what “community” really meant. But when I heard our Head of School, Mr. Todd Bland, first speak about it, I realized that community at Milton goes way past what you could ever imagine. I see it as having three levels. The first level is with your class and with the Upper School student body as a whole. This community is small, only about 750 people strong, but tightly woven so you seldom see a face you don’t recognize after your first couple months of the year. The second level is with your friends with whom you share most of your day in the classroom, in the theater, or on the athletic fields. Your relationship with friends goes way past the occasional “hello” in the classroom or hallway. You get to know these people as you spend time with them, study with them, and support them on a daily basis. And lastly, the third level is the relationships with teachers and faculty. Class sizes are small enough that your teacher gets to know each and every student very well. As a junior, I still get caught up in deep conversations with my freshman history teacher and Class IV dean Mr. Michael Lou about politics, world news, or just Boston sports. Milton can seem a daunting place, especially for incoming freshman; however, Milton’s amazing community combats that unnerving feeling with its tightly knit community that after only a few months starts to feel like family.

When I came to Milton, the first thing I noticed is there is so much to do. Whether sports, clubs, assemblies, or even just hanging out with friends in the Student Center, there is always something going on. When the school week comes to an end, Milton becomes a place where I spend practically my entire weekend. Milton’s athletic events are always fun, whether you’re playing in them or just going to a game to cheer on your classmates. Plays and performances are great as well–the student-led Dance Concert is one of the biggest events of the year. There is also the Student Activity Association (SAA), which is a group of students who help plan Milton weekend events. These vary from hosting a hypnotist to a dance to a magician. Whatever the SAA chooses, it’s always fun to go to dinner on Friday night after classes and sports and then go to the weekend activities. Because Milton is half boarders and half day students, there is a constant buzzing atmosphere on campus that truly makes Milton what it is, and weekend events on campus are some of my favorite times of the year. I feel lucky knowing I can come to campus anytime and there will always be something going on. This is something I feel is truly unique to Milton and what makes it so special.
