A couple of times a year, when the winter weather looks especially dicey, the Milton Academy campus shut down on account of a snow day. Each student waits not-so-patiently, whether it be at home or in their dorm, to get the automated call telling us that we do not have to go to school the next day. Snow days are especially celebrated in the dorm, as shouts and cheers ring through the hallway, and a dance party inevitably breaks out. The day is filled with baking, sledding and snowball fights. On our first snow day this year, my dorm, Robbins House, hosted an annual snowball fight with our brother dorm, Forbes House. After that, we went inside for brownies and hot chocolate, and had a movie night in our common room. Although snow days are rare, they are cherished for bringing us together and strengthening the unforgettable bond forged in a dorm.

Milton Academy is full of spirit around the holidays! Even though there are only 13 days between Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks, the students are busy with traditions and festivities.

The Habitat for Humanity student group is raising money for those who were affected by the South Carolina floods. They are selling candy canes that Milton students can purchase and address to their friends with attached messages. The sale is a great way to spread awareness and holiday cheer throughout campus.

The Jewish Student Union hosted their annual Chanukah Holiday Party on Tuesday. “We played Chanukah music, served jelly donuts and latkes with applesauce, and played dreidel with gelt,” says Jacquie Golden, a junior. The entire student body was invited to the party. Stopping by was a great opportunity share in the Jewish holiday traditions.

Each year, the Milton boarding community gathers for a semi-formal Boarder Dinner. The students enjoy delicious food and listen to Milton’s several a capella groups perform holiday tunes. After Boarder Dinner, boarding boys partake in the annual holiday caroling tradition. “We sing three songs as a whole dorm and then we sing one song as just a senior class to a specific girl,” explains Nat Deacon, a Forbes House senior. “The senior song is usually the most special because we are singing to a girl we have been with the last four years.” Many Milton students would say this event is a highlight of their year. The night is full of laughter and joy!

As winter break approaches, the students are excited to return to their families for a few weeks of rest. Everyone is already eager to see what the New Year will bring!

The short stretch between Thanksgiving break and Holiday break is my favorite even with a crammed workload, tight and busy schedule, and dark and cold weather. When I returned to campus, I was greeted with a festively decorated dorm, complete with lights, stockings, and even a tree. The first night back, the new students make their personalized stockings to hang on the wall, in which the “secret Santa” gifts are place. When I returned to my room, I was able to hang up lights and decorations, and even fit a small tree right in the middle of the room. Even when I am away from my house and my family, I still feel right at home with my second family. My dorm room feels like my room at home, and the dorm common room feels like my living room. In a time that is focused on family and tradition, the dorm delivers that feeling. All of the hard work during this stretch culminates into one big celebration: the night before holiday break. The night starts with Boarder Dinner, a celebration of the first part of the year being over, as well as celebrating the holidays. After the dinner, boarders recess back into their dorms to change into warmer clothes. Then, each boy dorm walks around campus and carols to the waiting girls dorms. Finally, everyone returns into his or her respective dorms. In my dorm, we finish the night with secret Santa, as well as some hot chocolate and food. What could be a long and dreary time at school actually turns into everyone’s favorite time.

As the fall sports seasons come to an end, the school comes together to get ready for games against our rival school, Nobles and Greenough School. The week that leads up to Pep Rally is spirit week. Each day, Upper School students dress up in different outfits for the different days of the week to prepare for the big weekend of games. This year, Monday was Groutfit Day, a grey sweatshirt with grey sweatpants. Tuesday was Twin Day, so different pairs of students wear the same outfits. Wednesday was mix-match day, which is when people wear different patterns that clash like stripes and plaid. Thursday was ugly sweater day, and Friday, the day of pep rally, was Orange and Blue Day.

The whole school, K-12, comes to the gym in the morning to get fired up for the weekend games. Every year, the pep rally consists of a performance from the Step Team, a relay race, and other fun activities led by senior student hosts. The event unites the whole school and allows everyone to get involved. The energy in the room gets all the athletes ready for their games and everyone else in the Milton spirit to cheer them on.

Milton is incredibly supportive in all aspects of the school, whether it be for athletics, academics, or arts. Pep rally is just one way that shows how much the Milton community cares for each other.

As the fall sports season enters the last few weeks, most Milton students are dreading the cold Boston winter that looms ahead. However, one group of students in particular cannot wait for the first snowflakes to fall. Those students, myself included, are members of the Milton downhill Ski Racing Team. The ski team is tight-knit group of kids who come together in their mutual love of cold weather, snow and skiing.

Milton is one of the many ISL schools that maintain a Varsity level ski team. We practice three times a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) at Blue Hills, a ski “hill” that is just 15 minutes away from campus. On Wednesdays, our team travels to Nashoba Valley to compete in races alongside ISL schools such as Nobles, Belmont Hill, Lawrence Academy, BBN, and many others. While the races are no doubt competitive, the attitude that skiers bring to these races is far different than one would find in other sports. These skiers come together driven by the desire to win races, but possibly more important than any sense of competitive spirit is each skier’s appreciation representing their school while simultaneously pursuing their passion for skiing.

My time on the Milton Ski Team has truly been special. I have had formed strong friendships with members of the team as well as with skiers from other schools, as skiers from different schools tend to intermingle during the races at Nashoba. I am sorry that this will be my last season on the team, but I look forward to younger Milton students discovering the amazing experience that is the Milton Ski Team.

On a recent Friday, Milton had its annual under-the-lights football game against St. Sebastian’s. Although the game was away this year, an impressive amount of fans, including myself, went to Needham to support our team. Students drove over with friends and there was a fan bus for boarders and anyone else who needed a ride. Milton students from every grade stood together in the end zone with homemade signs, faces painted orange and blue, and a whole lot of school spirit. I know I was not alone when I woke up the following morning with a raspy voice after all of our cheering. Our football team fought a well-matched battle against St. Sebs, one of the best teams in the ISL, but unfortunately ended up losing 33-36. Everyone there would agree, however, that it was a great night. Milton moments like this one, when we all crowded the end zone to celebrate a touchdown and earned our team a penalty for “excessive celebration,” are the ones that I know I’ll remember forever.

Pool lot soccer is a sport known by few, but loved by all who partake. The end of my sophomore and entire junior year are full of great memories, but none as amazing as playing pool lot soccer. As an underclassman you are doomed to the bad parking spaces located a grueling five-minute walk away. However, my friends and I turned this apparent tragedy into a year-long competition. The idea behind the sport was to delay the start of the school day just for 15 minutes and partake in a rousing game of soccer before we went to morning assembly. The game was seldom stopped by the weather and snow only intensified the competition. The game was fun because it was not structured, it was not officiated, and it was not sponsored. It was fun because it was time to let everything else go and enjoy the company of friends. It was also not uncommon to walk into assembly afterwards covered with sweat and a beaming smile. Pool lot activities defined my junior year, because in a time that is focused so much on schoolwork, I also had moments of goofy banter between friends and unadulterated bliss in pure moments of adolescent reality. Milton offers so many amazing opportunities, but the best are those you create yourself with the ones who matter to you.

Boarding students will tell you that the boarding experience is incredibly rewarding and one reason is because each dorm has its own traditions. A home away from home, your dorm is an environment that is conducive to making incredible friends and having fun!

As the New England weather slowly transitions from summer to autumn, some of my favorite boarder traditions begin. In the dorms, the dorm monitor (a senior who works alongside the dorm parents) creates small groups called “families.” During pumpkin season, the dorm monitor invites the entire dorm to sit in “families” and carve pumpkins! Robbins House, one of the four girls’ dorms on campus, carved pumpkins last weekend. In our “families,” students cleaned the pumpkins and roasted pumpkin seeds, while others carved the pumpkins! This year, the girls went a step beyond the traditional pumpkin carving activity; they built and decorated haunted gingerbread houses!

Boarding at Milton Academy is very special, for you have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in a tight-knit and inclusive community. Whether its participating in dorm events or forming new friendships, Milton creates a kind, welcoming, and enthusiastic atmosphere where living at school is special because it is a home that you share with your closest friends. The friendships that you make at Milton will be ones you will remember for life.

The Student Activities Association (SAA) is a large presence here on the Milton campus. This group of students along with faculty member, Ms. Reiser, plans the weekend events that take place on campus. And this year, they’re off to a great start. From the mentalist, to the back-to-school dance, the SAA activities drew large crowds and facilitated student-to-student interaction. In addition to the traditional, creative and entertaining announcements at morning assemblies, the group has implemented a texting service where students can be notified via text of the events taking place on campus each night. By providing another platform where students can stay up to date, SAA has taken strides to ensure that no student is left unaware or without something to do. Over Columbus Day weekend coming, this hand picked group of students made it clear that they aim to please. Liveband karaoke, laser tag, a showing of Pitch Perfect 2 (accompanied by calzones), and a trip to the movies were on the calendar. SAA has great momentum behind them that will surely propel them throughout the rest of the year.
