The night begins with the entire boarding community coming together for a delicious meal. After dinner, all of the boys’ dorms head out for my favorite part of the night- caroling. We first sing to the head of school, Mr. Bland, and his family, and then proceed to stop to serenade every girls’ dorm. Our dorm started practicing a week ago in anticipation of the big night. The songs are rarely traditional Christmas carols, but rather fun, popular songs that are easy to sing (Taylor Swift has always been a popular choice). This is my favorite night of the year because it is so much fun, but also because it brings the dorm together in ways few other things can. Everyone wants to be able to take pride in their performance at the end of the night, so each dorm rallies around each other to create a performance few would have thought possible out of 45 high school boys. In Wolcott, we celebrate a great performance with Chinese food and a dorm showing of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” When I’m in college next year, I will truly miss the craziness of dorm caroling and the bonding the night brings, but for the time being, I still have one more to enjoy.

Whether it’s a Saturday morning touch football game on the quad or a debate about whether or not golf is a sport in the lobby at check in, dorm life makes it so easy to relax and relieve the stress of school when you need to. (Golf is definitely a sport, by the way.) It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of school at times, but dorm life allows everyone to forget about school and have fun once in a while, and that’s the main reason why I have come to appreciate living in Wolcott House so much.
